Structural monitoring of a road bridge: the installation of the SHBox system

In this article, we will take a closer look at the basic steps that are followed by the Sysdev team during the installation of the SHBox system, the first black box of infrastructure that can accurately monitor its health status in real time.

In particular, we will observe how Sysdev’s structural monitoring solutions have been applied in a concrete context: illustrating the specific case of the installation of SHBox sensors on a road bridge. The architectural work involved is located at the center of an important traffic junction, so it is crucial to ensure continuous and accurate monitoring.

Through this example, all stages of the intervention will be presented, from planning to installation, so as to provide a clear and detailed view of all the key steps in this process.

The preliminary stage: site survey and project definition

The first part of the work was composed on the one hand in an analysis of the structural and environmental conditions prior to our intervention, and on the other hand in the definition of a design commensurate with the specific characteristics of the bridge and the site in which it was placed (specifically, the bridge is located above a stream of medium flow).

  1. Site inspection

The inspection phase was essential to ensure that the monitoring system was optimally implemented. Our experts conducted a thorough inspection of the bridge, gathering crucial data on the existing structural condition.

Field measurements were taken to verify the availability of Internet connections and LoRa network coverage, which is essential for communication between the sensors and the analysis platform. In addition, photos and reports were collected to document the condition of the facility and space plan so as to facilitate accurate planning.

  1. Project development

With the information gathered during the survey, one of our trusted structural engineers developed a detailed plan for the deployment of the SHBox sensors. This plan identified strategic locations on the bridge to place the multi-sensor nodes, optimizing the coverage and accuracy of the detections.

The location of the sensors was selected taking into account the specific characteristics of the bridge and its interactions with the underlying stream to best monitor deformations, tilts and other critical parameters.

The installation of SHBox sensors

Once the project was approved, we moved on to the operational phase of installing the SHBox system.

Multi-sensor nodes, capable of detecting a wide range of parameters such as strain, temperature, tilt, displacement, and vibration (in case of earthquake), were strategically mounted on the bridge and connected to the LoRa network for data transmission. After installation, comprehensive training was provided to the client’s staff to ensure effective management of the system.

Finally, the system’s periodic maintenance plan has been prepared, through which the operation of the system can be monitored over time and ensure that the sensors are operating at their maximum capacity.

SHBox’s solution for infrastructure security

The installation of SHBox sensors on this bridge is a concrete example of how Sysdev’s advanced technology can be applied to improve safety, predictivity and infrastructure management.

With our monitoring system, critical facilities can be monitored in real time, enabling efficient and sustainable resource management. This operation not only optimized bridge monitoring, but also demonstrated the importance of predictive maintenance and continuous monitoring to ensure infrastructure reliability.
