How does the SHBox system work after its installation? And what are the elements that are taken into account for predictive infrastructure monitoring?
To answer these questions, a new case study is presented below, concerning an intervention carried out by our team of specialists to keep a pipeline of a hydropower plant located inside an alpine tunnel under control.
Structural monitoring
Once the multi-sensor nodes are installed, the collected signals are continuously transmitted to our analysis platform via a LoRa network link. The data collected by the instrumentation are not only processed and published in real time on Sysdev’s cloud platform, but are also synergistically embedded within an interpretative physical model that aggregates data from all individual sensors and accounts for the overall performance of the monitored structure.
At this point, the significant data are placed within a micro-alteration trend graph. From which, our trusted structural engineer proceeds to highlight the correct behaviors and any anomalies to be placed under scrutiny.
In this way, through the preparation of a quarterly report , the health status of the analyzed facility and irregularities to be investigated more thoroughly are reported to the client.
The collection of data
But what precisely is the information analyzed by multi-sensor nodes?
In the specific case of the pipeline we examined, the following parameters were considered:
- Pipeline rotations.
- Material deformations.
- Structure shifts.
- Overall temperature.
- The level of curvature.
- The vertical distance between different sensors.
Data sensing is done in a continuous and programmed manner through the activation of multi-sensor nodes at regular intervals (approximately every 4 hours). At the time of activation, if even one of the measured parameters exceeds a predefined threshold, the sensor
sends a message to the cloud platform. In the event that within 24 hours the sensor does not detect any overthreshold message, a backup signal is still sent.
The configuration of the sensors, as well as the threshold parameters, and the timing of acquisition and message sending, can be adapted according to the specific characteristics of the monitored facility and the individual needs of the customer. At the same time, alarm thresholds can be configured if the sensed data exceed a limit value considered critical.
